This unique lifestyle has been portrayed in the novels and movies for decades from the smash hit “Shogun” in the late 1970s to Tom Cruise’ more recent take on feudal Japanese society in the “The Last Samurai”. The Japanese way of life is so strict, yet it impresses us because of the honor that is bestowed on it’s people.

The kimono that is used in this ensemble is reminiscent of the ones worn by the women in the old country and even today but far more infrequently as western or global culture takes a hold of Japan.

When you don this outfit it will be as if you are entering a sacred temple on the island of Japan. The kimono that is used is beautifully adorned with a pink butterfly print throughout.

There is a white formal looking skirt that goes underneath the kimono and a extra wide white belt. Through the middle of the belt is a purple cloth that ties in the back as a large bow.

Completing the outfit is a large headpiece that is multicolored and is covered in butterflies that match the kimono.

Just step back and take it all in. You will think you were looking at an authentic garment. This is not your typical outfit that you would see children wear for Halloween which makes it perfect for the occasion.

No one else will probably have this on which will make your daughter the envy of the crowd. Where else would you expect to see a child in a Geisha costume? But the great thing about this outfit is that it can be for any party.

One is all finery and elegance. It will receive compliment after compliment at any party, Halloween or otherwise that you might attend. It is the oriental princess costume. In terms of an oriental costume, this is very simple but also quite stunning. It is a red or orange colored Chinese dress (it’s description says it is red but it looks like orange to me). It has a silk like sheen to the fabric but is actually polyester. There is an elaborate Chinese pattern on the dress. It has a black trim and a slit up one side of the dress. A combination of the vivid color, pattern and the slinky look of the dress on the body are sure to elicit plenty of positive responses at any party you attend. Highly recommended. You may want to accessorize the costume with a black haired wig and even an oriental fan if you think this is appropriate. If you have long hair then you could tie it up in a bun with chop sticks to give it an oriental look.

The second oriental costume is the ninja outfit. For many western people, the ninja is famous as a masked assassin or even a good guy in some films. They wear a dark costume so that they can fade into the shadows before or after an important mission.

If you were to go to many south east Asian countries however, a common site is a ninja school where young kids are trained in various martial arts. It is quite a contrast to the stereotype of a ninja and a funny site to see 50 or so kids being trained in a kung fu moves or some other fighting skill all dressed in ninja outfits. But I guess in these countries it is akin to sending your kids to little league baseball or touch football training (even soccer, although I think soccer might be taking over in Asia too these days).

The ninja costume is also quite a simple costume. Simple all black with a black mask. You can get variations on this theme that are more colorful and creative. These are probably a bit more fun for a fancy dress or Halloween party. To make the most of a ninja costume, I guess you have to throw in a few accessories too. Sword, throwing stars and all the other usual stuff can really add to the look of the costume.

Authentic looking geisha costumes have a few components if they are to look convincing. You will need a Geisha hairstyle and make up. In terms of the garments worn, you will need a kimono and obi. You may even go so far as to get split toe socks and Geisha sandals. That’s pretty much a complete Geisha costume. However, real Geisha would probably have a unique design for their kimono and obi.

Two examples of adult themed Geisha costumes are below. As you can see they have borrowed a few ideas from the original outfits but they are more interested in creating a sexy look rather than the exotic look that a real Geisha costume might give.

The main aspects that they have borrowed is the Asian patterns on the kimono/dress. Both have a sash or obi to tie the dress together but both obis are quite understated and almost like a belt. Even so they are sure to make an impression where ever you choose to wear them.

In fact many people now use kimonos as a dressing gown or bath robe everyday. They like the silken feel that the robe gives to the body and it is loose and comfortable  to wear on these occasions. These type of kimonos are probably not traditionally Japanese. They probably have a dressing gown design using silk or some other oriental fabric and have a Japanese pattern.

If you really want a Japanese kimono costume then you probably want to dress as a Geisha or even a samurai or ninja if you are male.

Geisha are female entertainers. They would entertain people by playing Japanese music or reciting poems. They would also act a hosts at formal occasions and ceremonies. The would enact the ceremony and follow elaborate protocol which venerated many Japanese ideals and aspirations.

Geishas go through an extensive apprenticeship period where they learn many artistic and protocol skills. They also learn how to dress as a traditional Geisha. There costume and make up change during the apprenticeship period. At the beginning they are known as Maiko and their costume and make up are considerably more bold than older Geisha. For instance, the face will be completely covered in white make up. This is the most striking look that we have of a Geisha, and of course, is an iconic image that many people associate with Japan and Japanese culture.

Geisha numbers have been waning for many years now. Some estimates suggest that there are only  a few thousand practicing Geisha in Japan now. I’m sure the practice will always be kept alive as it is an important cultural identity for many Japanese people however it is hard for the women and girls that take up this occupation. The skills they learn are not really in step with a modern world. Pay or compensation for there work is also poor.

With this said, their costumes are truly beautiful and can make a great outfit for fancy dress parties and other events such as Halloween.

Some men in Japan also wear kimonos. Again, they are worn at home as they are comfortable and loose. Alternatively, they may be worn in a formal capacity at official ceremonies. Sumo wrestlers will also wear a kimono before a fight.

In terms of a fancy dress costume, a kimono can be worn as part of a samurai or ninja outfit. Samurai were Japanese knights. They would often wear kimonos under their armor or when not in battle. Ninjas probably didn’t wear a kimono but it is often used in fancy dress occasions because it looks oriental.

In truth, the Geisha tradition is dieing out. There are fewer Geisha than ever before and it is getting harder to recruit new girls to take on the apprenticeship. In part this might be due to the marked contrasts in a Geisha life and the kind of lives that modern women want to live. A Geisha is cloistered and has a skill set that is so unique and specific that she would struggle to find work doing anything else. With this said, many older Geisha go on to be Tea house owners and business women in their own right, but even still there is a general perception that a Geisha career is a very limited choice.
